Besides his own warships the
admiral must be very aware of
the 150 ships transiting the Sea
of Marmara each day as well as
the ships in the various ports.
There is little point in evacuating
warships if an oil tanker left
behind leaks, sinks or explodes.
Those familiar with historical
collisions and wrecks in the
Turkish Straits will recognize
that all of the ships shown were
involved over the years. One
crude carrier spill can close the
Straits for days.
