Turkey has an additional
complication: there are islands in
the Sea of Marmara. Many are
inhabited a few thousand
residents in colder months. but
the resident population often
doubles in summer. In addition
there are frequently many
thousands of tourists. With the
exception of some fortunate
people on the island of Marmara
itself, it is likely almost everyone
on an island or travelling to an
island by boat would be killed
by the tsunami. Most people
swimming, fishing or boating
near or on shore would have
little or no warning.
