We pose the theoretical question whether it is better to be
the incoming Governor of North American sub-country of
California or the President of the African country of Sudan.

Sudan is the largest
country by area in
Africa. It has fewer
people than Ethiopia,
Egypt, the Democratic
Republic of the Congo
and the Republic of
South Africa.
The advantage of a
coastline is one is
usually able to
construct a port and
engage in marine trade.

Geological hazards include earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, droughts, major storms and
volcanoes. While none are considered as threats, California does have six volcanoes: Clear Lake,
Mt. Lassen, Mt. Shasta, Long Valley, Coso, and Medicine Lake. Mt. Lassen last erupted in 1921. A
major earthquake even without tsunamis striking Los Angeles would be very bad.
More people, less urbanized, more land, more geological stability: advantage Sudan.
